Scarredness of paper and carton
surfaces |
|
 |
|
The areas jutting out as peaks of the paper surface are
described as scars. The scarredness as a
reason of coating, printing, gluing or laminating problems or
its influence on the surface quality was not analyzed until now
because it was not measurable with acceptable energy. Scars
arise in the process of sheet forming in the paper machine as
impression of wires and felts. They are possibly embossed by the
impression of felts in the press section. Greater pores or
deepening in the felt lead to pulp accumulations in the press
process which jut out as peaks of the paper surface. These peaks
are planished by pressure and compressed in the contact with the
rollers, drying cylinder, calander, etc.

Function and operation of the system
|
|
 |
The contrasted picture of an area of about 28mm
* 28mm by defined light will be recorded by a CCD camera
, digitised into 512*512 microdots and evaluated.
The visual impression of a disturbed plane position because of
Cockling or other reasons are eliminated by a suitable
filtration.

Current
applications of the system |
|
 |
-
The analysis of the suspected correlation of
the scarred form of the uncoated base paper and the uneven
absorption of printing inks (Mottling) at the coated paper.
-
The analysis of the correlation between
color penetration, printability and printing uniformity on
the one side and scarredness on the
other side.
-
The analysis of the correlation between
toner absorption and fixing on the one side and scarredness
at photocopy papers on the other side.
-
The analysis of the influence of the scarredness
at processes as coating, stick together, laminating,
lacquering.
-
Use of the system for quality control.
-
Optimization of the surface structures of
felts and wires.
-
Ideas about the necessity of a change of the
machine clothing (wire, felt) in the paper machine.
-
Correlation of the roughness index with the
consumption of color, adhesive, coating color, varnish and
other coatings.
